Political Illustrations [Apr. 7th, 2008|04:01 pm]

I did some illustrations for a student-made political magazine here at Bard, "BardPolitik." Haven't heard back from them in a while, so I'm not even sure if they're going to use these. Figured I'd post them here.

New Video - Path to Heaven [Apr. 6th, 2008|10:58 pm]
Latest video directed by Otto that I helped shoot and edit. It's a goof commercial for a Christian-themed video game.

Eda Mame, Rice, & Karage Tofu with Sesame Ginger Sause! [Jan. 3rd, 2008|05:29 pm]

Today we cooked and ate an outstanding lunch! Soak tofu in a mix of ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and mirin, then deep-fry it to get Karage tofu. Give it a try!

New Video - MAN WITH A WEBCAMERA [Oct. 4th, 2007|02:55 pm]
I'm taking a "Virtual Filmmaking" class at Bard, where we collaborate with film students in St. Petersburg, Russia, via video-conferencing and webcam-chats. This is the first project I've completed, with help from my partner Masha. The assignment was to make a video about the communication between ourselves and our partners in Russia, so I decided mine would be about the technical frustration of setting up a functioning camera-chat session... (which we had much trouble with!) It is also a spoof of early Russian cinema, films by Dziga Vertov and Segei Eisenstein, "Man with a Movie Camera" and the like.

"Man with a Webcamera"
(30 MB, Quicktime)

Hopefully I will be able to post Masha's versions of the projects as well when I receive them.

[Note: the Russian text in the movie is wildly inaccurate]

(no subject) [Jul. 28th, 2007|10:00 am]
Ehhh, so my whole art-a-day thing turned into, like, art-never.

Well, anyway, Dan Copulsky asked me to do some illustrations for Harry Marker's short story "Cocaine Makes the Heart Grow Fonder," which he is turning into a zine to distribute around the Simon's Rock campus & elsewhere.

7/6/07 Website up! [Jul. 6th, 2007|11:25 pm]
One of the reasons I've been so bad about updating recently.

http://www.derekvangorder.com

I made it as a means to advertise myself as a freelance filmmaker/videographer. Check it out! And if you know anybody who's looking to hire an editor, cameraman, or what-have-you, send 'em the link!

The site's still under construction, so if you find any bugs, please let me know and tell me which browser you're using. Suggestions are welcome, too. I'm probably going to replace the currently-ugly "Storyboards" page with a more general "Illustrations" page in the near future.

P.S. The "reel" for Coda in the Short Films page was made to highlight the cinematography, and so it's a large file, and somewhat spoiler-ish. A general trailer will be up on a separate Coda website soon.

Was on hiatus for a while... Brother's back, been to Boston, been busy. Inspiration, too, has been fleeting. Apologies for the irregularity and general lack of quality.

021 - Retro #2 [Jun. 30th, 2007|10:55 pm]

Found this in a dusty old box in the attic. If you spent any time in supermarkets during the early nineties, you may have seen it too.

Note that I remained calm and collected, even in the face of an imminent powerwheels disaster.

019 - 6/27/07 [Jun. 27th, 2007|11:26 pm]
Busy today, so I'm kinda cheating. This is a page background I'm working on for my film/video website.

I'm designing the whole site as an image in Photoshop, then splitting it up and putting it into an old web program called GoLive. Finally gave up trying to do it in iWeb, that is the most goddamn annoying application ever made. I appreciate Apple trying to make their programs user-friendly, but all it really does is provide you with a very rigid basic template, which you have to battle with every time you want to customize something.
